Unconscious Places. Photographs by Thomas Struth. Foreword by Klaus Bußmann, Ulrich Loock, Fiona McLeod and Kasper König. Texts by Ingo Hartmann, Ulrich Loock and Friedrich Meschede (texts in German and English). Verlag Buchandlung Walther Konig, Köln/Kunsthalle Bern; Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Kunst and Kulturgeschichte, Münster; The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh; Portikus, Frankfurt am Main, 1988. 94 pp. Large thin quarto. Clothbound in photo-illustrated dust jacket. 44 black-and-white and 3 color reproductions.

An early catalogue by Struth, who has gone on to be one of the central figures of the Düsseldorf School, referring to the photographers who studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie. Through the Bechers, the influence of Stephen Shore played a significant role in their teaching. Over the past twenty years this group--which also includes Andreas Gursky, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff, and Candida Höfer, among others-- has completely altered our notions of the photographic image.
The title of Struth's exhibition, "Unconscious Places", is an homage to Shore's Uncommon Places.
"The photography of Thomas Struth (born in 1954 in Geldern, living in Düsseldorf) deals with urban architecture. Objective shots show streets, buildings, or squares in various places in the US, Europe, and Japan. The normality of the architectural reality defining public space has the effect that in the photographic reproduction it, to a large extent, remains unrecognized. Thomas Struth's photographs reveal the familiar outside reality of these unconscious places, thus allowing a visual examination of the city's history, its social and cultural conditions in the way they are reflected in the architecture."--original promotional copy from Portikus, Frankfurt am Main.

Fine- in Near Fine dust jacket; slight 'kisses' at tips; some rippling and wear to jacket; short tears to to jacket at two corners; wear at upper edge.
