Hand-written notation on verso by John T. Hill, executor of the Evans estate: "This print was made by Douglas Sandhage at the request of Walker Evans for potential use in his 1971 MOMA retrospective. It was printed in the studio of John T. Hill/JTH."
Evans worked Two images from a series on Chicago architecture, part of which became the 1947 Fortune Magazine photo-essay "Chicago: A camera exploration of the huge energetic urban sprawl of the midlands". This early essay was one of the many Evans did for the magazine between 1945 and 1965. These two images, which do not appear in the essay, find Evans in 'photographic preservationist' mode. As far back as the early 30s, Evans had been creating de facto archive of vernacular architecture. Rather than the confident boosterism of the essay's title, Evans' deadpan vision of these down at the heals Victorian structures renders them strangely vulnerable. As Lincoln Kirsten wrote in a 1933 catalog essay for a show of Evans' Victorian House project at MoMA, "Detroit, Clevland, Chicago, St. Louis, and Philadelphia all await the tender cruelty of Evans' camera."
