"Bill Brandt thought of his nudes as the fullest expression of the poetic photography to which he aspired. The present book is the most extensive representation of this part of his oeuvre. His long exploration of the nude--essentially from the early 1940s to the late 1970s--is perhaps the most imaginative, intense and controversial of all his projects..."--from Mark Haworth-Booth's commentary.
"Brandt's nudes were first published in 1961 n the now much sought after gravure edition Perspective of Nudes, which gave rise to the highly compressed white and black tones that are the hallmark of Brandt's printing. I was lucky enough to be one of the few people to see Bill Brandt working in his cramped darkroom under his towering Kodak enlarger. The highly skilled people who are currently printing from Brandt's negatives, however, consider them to be the most difficult they have ever faced. The result of sandwiching his negatives between plate glass in that same enlarger, whcih served him so well over the years, was a plethora of dust and a diffusion of some of the detail which can now be restored
"Reproduction techniques have advanced considerably since Brandt's time, particularly in the digital age, and my desire in bringing together this New Perspective has been to equal and then raise, wherever possible, the level of prior reproductions. Thankfully, access to the original prints and negatives has allowed us to take every care to provide the sharpest image possible, whilst maintaining the mystery and 'atmosphere' that Brandt sought. This book is printed on Monadnock Astolite, known for its outstanding contrast and printablity, typset in Plantin Light, printed by Calff & Meischke of Amsterdam, and bound by Hipwell Bookbinders of England"--John-Paul Kent, The Bill Brandt Archive (from the colophon)
