Práce je Ziva (Work is Living). Photographs by Vladimír Hipman. Ceska Graficka Unie, Prague, 1945. Small folio. First edition. Quarter cloth; green textured paper boards, stamped in white. Photo-illustrated dust jacket. [lacking original slipcase]. 172 gravure reproductions.

"The quality of the series of modernist photographs of factories and chimneys or details of wire, nails, chains, metal graters and other industrial products, created in the thirties and forties by the now unfairly neglected Vladimír Hipman, remains unappreciated. Some of them were included in the publication Work is Living (Práce je živá), published about Christmas 1945. "--The New Objectivity and Constructivism in Czech inter-war photography, Photorevue.
Hipman is the foremost Czech Modernist still working in the New Vision style of the 20s & 30s following World War II. As a paean to industrial might and the heroic worker, this book ranks with Lewis Hine's Men at Work, Germaine Krull's Metal and much of the work of E.O. Hoppé and Albert Renger-Patzsch.

Near Fine in Near Fine- dust jacket; very clean boards with a slight warp; some light foxing to cloth spine and endpapers. Jacket edge worn with moderate abrasion to extremities; small edge tears (less than 1/2") at 'tips' and edges.
