Interior America. Photographs and text by Chauncey Hare. Designed by Marvin Israel and Kate Morgan. Aperture, New York, 1978. 175 pp. Oblong quarto. First edition. Clothbound in photo-illustrated dust jacket. Black-and-white reproductions.

As noted historian and social observer Theodore Roszak wrote in his cover blurb for Interior America, these images chronicle not just the spiritual desolation at the heart of an industrial society, but also reflect Hare's own despair. Prior to taking up photography he worked as an oil industry engineer for over 20 years, becoming increasingly alienated from his work and the attitudes it forced him to take. A chilling body of work that is a harsh indictment of the consequences of industrial production and the alienation it produces in the lives of individuals. "...an interesting figure who deserves a renewed focus of critical attention."--Parr & Badger

Small manufacturer's defect to cloth on rear board, else Fine- in Near Fine jacket; lightly foxed page edges; light wear and sun-fading to jacket with 1" closed tear lower edge front panel.
