Oog Om Oog [An Eye for an Eye]. Photographs by Sanne Sannes. Poetry by Hugo Claus after the poems of Macedonios. De Bezige Bij, Amsterdam, 1964. Unpaged (appx. 120 pp.) Small folio. First edition, first and only printing. Hardbound. Photo-illustrated boards and endpapers. No jacket as issued. Black-and-white reproductions. Contemporary review from a Dutch newspaper laid in.

While Hugo Claus'text is the sort of mysterioso-love poetry that has it's roots in Baudelarire and beyond, Sanne Sannes photographs in this 1964 book take the soft-focus, intimate black-and-white erotica of other sixties photographers--Sam Haskins, Wingatge Paine--to and entirely darker and more Dionysian place. Aesthetically and psychologically, his intimate close-ups of woman in the throws of ecstasy have as much in common with the films of Ingemar Bergman than with his peers in photography.

Excerpts from a 2008 documentary about Sannes Sannes, 'The women of Sanne Sannes'
