André Martin: 1965 Rally Brochure For Citroën DS19. Société Anonyme André Citroën/Delpire Publicité, Paris, n.d (1965). 24 pp. Oblong quarto. Stiff wrappers. Saddle stitched. Color photographs.
For this rare mid-sixties catalogue, André Martin uses a range of cinematic devices to produce you-are-there visceral feelings of the off-road rally: the speed, the noise, the mud, rain and snow, and, of course the heroics of the drivers.
Citroën--producers of among the most avant-garde auto designs ever marketed on a mainstream basis--always prided itself on its collaborations with artists, which over the years included Martin, Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau, Jean-Paul Goude, and Marc Riboud. The DS (pronounced 'Déesse'--Goddess!) was one of the most unique cars ever made; the outstanding photography and graphic design of these catalogues is of a piece with Citroën's total design approach.
A bit of edge wear; otherwise Fine. |
