Petra, In The Hashemite Kingdom Of Jordan. Photographs by Emmet Gowin. Essay by Phillip C. Hammond, Professor of Anthropology, University of Utah. Pace MacGill Gallery, News York, 1986. 36 pp. First edition, first printing. Small, thin folio. Stiff wrappers. French fold dust jacket with tipped in cover image. 15 tri-tone plates.

In 1982 Emmet Gowin was invited to visit the country of his former student, Queen Noor al Hussein of Jordan, the wife of King Hussein. In 1983 and again in 1985, Gowin returned to photograph the ancient city of Petra. Printed by Meriden/Stinehour, the magnificent varnished plates accurately match the color and tonality of Gowin's rich photographs. The work depicts the beauty and mystery of the ancient tombs and passageways of this city that flourished from fourth-century B.C. until the mid-sixth century A.D.

Fine-/Near Fine+; a few spots of smudging and some sun-striking, mostly to rear panel.
