Augen-Blicke [Moments Preserved]. Eight essays in photographs and words by Irving Penn. With an introduction by Alexander Liberman. Rosemary Blackmon collaborated on captions and text. C.J. Bucher AG-Camera Verlag, Lucerne, 1960. 183 pp. Small folio. First edition. Clothbound in printed dustjacket. Library protector. Photo-illustrated laminated cardboard slipcase. 4pp insert with technical details. Numerous gravure and color reproductions.

Rare German edition of Penn's classic! An absolute masterpiece of printing, Penn spent a month in Lucerne, Switzerland overseeing the process at C.J. Bucher, who had produced Avendon's book Observations the previous year. Each of the eight sections in this monograph "have in common the photographer's deftly understated portraits, printed here in the subtlest gravure," says Vince Aletti in The Book of 101 Books. "Penn reinvented the classic daylight studio portrait for a more casual time," he goes on to say, "undercutting its formality but heightening its potential as a revealing performance."

Near Fine- in Near Fine+ dust jacket; internally bright with foxing to boards and preliminary pages; scattered foxing and light wear to jacket; Near Fine- slipcase; moderate soiling and shelf wear; a few areas of abrasion along joints.
