Sahel--The End of the Road. Photographs by Sebastião Salgado. Foreword by Orville Schell. Introduction by Fred Ritchin. Afterword by Eduardo Galeano. Concept and design by Lelia Wanick Salgado. University of California Press, Berkeley, 2004. 140 pp. Quarto. First English edition; first printing. SIGNED on half-title page. Clothbound in photo-illustrated dust jacket. 88 dutone illustrations.

In 1984, Salgado released Sahel: L'Homme en Detresse through a French publisher. It was his first book and was quickly followed by the ICP Photojournalist of the Year award in 1988. This is its first appearance in an English translation. His work in the famine and drought-stricken region of sub-Saharan Sahel set a template for nearly all of his subsequent projects-there is a tender righteousness to the work that both instills shame at current conditions and engenders courage to act for change. These words from the foreword read like a lifelong axiom: "The world is in peril, both nature and Humanity...Our very existence is in danger. This is tragically mirrored in the current state of humanity." Salgado's camerawork shows us glimpses of that mirror.

Fine-/Fine-; corners not perfect; light rubbing to jacket.
