One of two 'company' photobooks featured this week that were commissioned by printing firms (see also, Attila Rossi: Como se impreme un libro [How a Book Is Printed]! This one, by Alec Soth (of Sleeping by the Mississippi and Little Brown Mushroom fame) was shot for the international company Optimal Media Gmbh and was art directed and designed by veteran publisher Michael Mack, the founder of the SteidlMack imprint. The accompanying flyer gives information on the resolution, printing proceses, paper type and finish for page spreads throughout the book. It is thus an absolutely fascinating way to assess the myriad of choices that book makers face in the process of bringing a work into being. Highly recommended!!
