Folds. Photographs by by Roni Horn. Designed by Roni Horn with Anthony McCall Associates. Mary Boone Gallery, New York, 1991. 72 pp. Small quarto (10.5 x 8.65 in./). Limited edition of 700 copies. Hardbound. No jacket as issued. 36 color reproductions printed on heavy matt paper.
By far the hardest to find of Roni Horn's Ísland: To Place, her magisterial ten-volume exploration of the psycho-visual topography of Iceland. The photographs document extant sheepfolds; unique indigenous structures that dot the desolate landscapes of the island.
"The entrance to all my work is the idea of an encyclopedia of identity. It is best represented by the books, the series called To Place, which is extremely important to me. I have been working on this since 1988. It's really the heart. It is a series of books, each one of which adds to the whole in a way that alters the identity of it retroactively."--from a 1995 interview with
Claudia Spinelli, Journal of Contemporary Art
