From a November 2008 entry on the always lively Yummy! Ink blog:
If you happen to be in Stockholm you should consider to visit JH Engström Sketch of Home at GunGallery curated by the excellent photographic taste of the Art Director Greger Ulf Nilson. With great dedication he runs an imprint with Steidl, GUN, contributing to publish the best books with the most talented Swedish contemporary photographers. The photographs will be on view from November 8th until December 7th. Among Engström's newly released publications we find Sketch of Home published by GunGallery and two other books, CDG/JHE and Haunts published by Steidl.
JH Engström began to take photographs in the early 1990s when he was an assistant to fashion photographer Mario Testino and Swedish documentary photographer Anders Petersen. He went on to study photography at Gothenburg University from where he graduated in 1997.
Engström interweaves self-portraits with landscapes, nude portraits of his friends with faded interiors. The result is a dynamic and graphic sequence of images that Engström considers as his reflection of the tensions between loneliness and intimacy, and the disparities between events and elements in his life. Engström moves fluidly between different photographic processes for this highly poetic body of work, developing a sense of the emotional charge of the photographic styles used. Engström has received numerous grants and awards and his work is held in collections both in Sweden and abroad. He is a happy father of twins and lives and works in Stockholm."
