J. Russell Harper & Stanley Triggs, Editors. Portrait of A Period. A Collection of Notman Photographs, 1856 to 1915. McGill University Press, Montreal, 1967. First edition. Folio. Cloth in photo-illustrated dustjacket. 12 pp. + 164 warmtone plates, mainly of Canada.

This oversized, first monograph on the photographic work of Canada's pre-eminent 19th century photographer is divided into four sections: The People, The Cities, The Sea, and The Countryside. Equally adept at taking portraits and vivid topographic views, Notman and his son and staff produced an artistic record of Canadian life for more than half a century. Quoted from the dustjacket flap: "The special quality of the reproductions [in this book] was achieved by using a fine-screen lithographic process, developed at the Techno-Colour Company of Montreal after a year's experimentation. Nothing has been lost of the subtle tones and minute details registered on the original glass negatives. These were kindly loaned by the Notman Archives, McCord Museum, McGill University."

A fine copy; dustjacket with light surface edge-rubbing.
