Twenty-five Great Houses of France. The Story of the Noblest French Chateaux. Sir Theodore Andrea Cook. Country Life and George Newnes Ltd., London & Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, n.d. (circa 1915). Oversized folio. Publisher's two- color cloth in the rare dustjacket with large mounted halftone photograph. xl + 436 pp.

A study of the architecture of grand French chateaux, illustrated with 380 halftone photographs, of which more than 300 are by Frederick H. Evans. The good quality halftones were printed by Hudson & Kearns. Evans is well known for his luminous and delicate platinum photographs of English cathedrals; this is his most ambitious architectural publication of Continental architectural images.

Evans, originally a London bookseller, photographed from 1885 into the 1920's. His images were exhibited by Stieglitz at his gallery '291' and published in his periodical Camera Work. He was also a member of the Linked Ring and the Royal Photographic Society.

An unsually fine copy of this oversized book in the rarely present dustjacket; dustjacket with approximately 3/4 inch piece lacking at top of spine and a number of other small edge pieces lacking, particularly along top edge of both covers, and rippling of the paper on either side of the mounted photograph.
