Photojournalist Susan Meiselas covered the 1978-79 Sandanista uprising in Nicaragua from its beginnings through its eventual overthrow of the repressive Somoza regime. In this volume she has edited her best work into a chronological account of that conflict. This is more than just war photography, however. The color images hauntingly put us in touch with the lives of the people of the war, participants and bystanders alike. Battlefield horrors and the sufferings of the civilian population are straight-forwardly depicted, but we are also made to feel the elation of the popular forces in victory. This is a powerful photographic book, one that has the feel of history.
