A Photo Journal. Ruth Orkin. A Studio Book / The Viking Press, New York, 1981. First edition. Large quarto. Cloth in photo-illustrated dustjacket. 152 pp.

This is Orkin's second book, following A World Through My Window (1978); it is a retrospective of her personal and journalistic work, containing over one hundred sixty black-and-white and eight color images. Best known for her image American Girl in Italy which is used on the dustjacket, Orkin had a long career in photography and film. She was the daughter of a silent film actress and grew up in Hollywood, exposed to image-making at a tender age. In 1944 she moved to New York and began a career as a photojournalist, contributing to the popular picture magazine such as Life, Look, and Esquire, as well as to photographic publications such as U.S. Camera and Modern Photography . She and her photographer husband, Morris Engel, co-directed the ground-breaking Academy Award-nominated film Little Fugitive in the 1950's. In later years her photographs were exhibited at The Witkin Gallery in New York.

A very fine copy in fine dustjacket.
