Avedon Photographs, 1947-1977. Photographs by Richard Avedon. Essay by Harold Brodkey. Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, New York, 1978. First edition. Folio. Photo-illustrated laminated boards with clear, thick, printed acetate jacket. Unpaged. 162 duotones.
Published to coincide with a major retrospective exhibition of Avedon's portraits at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this handsomely produced large-format book includes portraits of Lauren Bacall, Cecil Beaton, Marlene Dietrich, Halston, Schiaparelli, Elizabeth Taylor, Twiggy, Gloria Vanderbilt, and many other luminaries and models. In his early twenties, Avedon worked as a fashion photographer under Alexey Brodovitch at HARPER'S BAZAAR. He continued to prefer studio work and often used strobe lighting to achieve the results he sought. The images in this collection are full page or double-page spreads.
A fine copy; the clear printed acetate jacket has yellowed along part of the far left edge and the bottom edge of the front cover, and shows minor signs of handling. |
