Don McCullin: Open Skies. Photographs by Don McCullin. Introduction by John Fowles. Signed on title page. Photo-illustrated wrappers. Oblong quarto. 72 duotone reproductions. Jonathan Cape, London, 1989. 70 pp.
Although photographer Don McCullin is best known for his uncompromising war reportage, he devotes his energies here to the English countryside of his youth. But if it was peace and quiet he was looking for, it doesn't seem as though he found it. In most of these landscape photographs, dark storm clouds threaten, dramatically robbing rural Britain of its mythic tranquility. Instead, there is a sense of impending doom, revealing McCullin's own belief that covering so many wars has "damaged his soul." A powerful book by a great photographer.
Lower extremities very lightly soiled; some yellowing around wrapper edges; some minor rubbing; otherwise Fine.
