Inventive Paris Clothes 1909 - 1939. A Photographic Essay by Irving Penn. With Text by Diana Vreeland. A Studio Book, The Viking Press, New York, 1977. First edition. Squarish quarto. Cloth in photo-illustrated dustjacket. 95 pp. INSCRIBED IN INK ON FRONT ENDPAPER BY PENN: "To _______, with kindest regards, Irving Penn."

Penn writes in the Foreword that he was inspired to photograph the Parisian fashions of the early twentieth century after seeing an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art that was curated by Diana Vreeland. The luxurious feminine couture creations of Poiret, Vionnet, Alix, Molyneux, Chanel, Paquin, Schiaparelli and others are posed on mannequins and lit to stunning effect.

A near fine copy with only slight dust soiling at top edge of the covers and a couple very small stray marks on the rear blank endpaper; dustjacket is also in near fine condition.
