William Eggleston's Guide. Photographs by William Eggleston. Text by John Szarkowski. First edition. Square octavo. Hardbound with Black leatherette-covered boards, with title stamped in gilt. Color plate tipped into embossed front cover. No dust jacket as issued. 48 color plates; 1 black-and-white photograph of William Eggleston by Geoffrey Biddle. Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1976. 112 pp.

William Eggleston's Guide was the first one-man show of color photographs presented at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum's first publication of color photography. The work in the Guide was made between 1969 and 1971, edited to a mere 48 powerful images. It was largely through Eggleston's efforts that color photography came to be accepted among the bastions of fine-art collectors. Since that time, Eggleston's deceptively informal gaze has influenced a subsequent generation of image-makers. This is a first edition of an undisputed classic--one of Andrew Roth's The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century.

A beautiful copy of this important book in Fine condition; very minor yellowing of pages, typical for this book; text block slightly cocked. Acetate protected cover.
