Levy's documentation of the Appalachian coal mining community, made during fourteen years of visits to West Virginia, Kentucky, and western Pennsylvania, is compassionate and informative. About Levy's work Paul Strand said, "I found [his] work among the miners both sincere and sensitive in its understanding of people, their labor, and their surroundings. His approach is honest, direct, and sympathetic."
