Zrcadlo Zivota. [The Mirror of Life]. Praha: Sfinx, 1949. First edition. Small quarto. Cloth-backed boards in photo-illustrated dustjacket. 181 pp. With approximately one hundred rich gravure photographs.
Vaclav Jiru exhibited artistic images in the Czech camera clubs alongside Sudek and others beginning in 1926, and also worked as a photojournalist for such periodicals as Picture Post, Liliput, and Wochen-Blatter.
After World War II he published a number of photographic books, and in 1957 he founded the review Fotografie. His photographs in this uncommon book are interspersed in loosely defined topical sections, including nude studies, a variety of human interest portraits, industrial and agricultural workers, city life, etc.
A very good copy, with lower bumped outer corners and light fading or discoloration at some edges of boards. Dustjacket light soiled, back panel with rubbing in the dark areas, and light edge rubbing (including 1/4 inch at top of spine) with one short closed edge tear.
