THIS LOT CONSISTS OF 3 BOOKS: Wieland Herzfelde, John Heartfield, Leben und Werk, 1962 (shown); Van Deren Coke, Avantgarde Photography in Germany, 1919-1939, 1982; and Bauhaus Fotographie, 1982

John Heartfield, Leben und Werk. Text by Wieland Herzfelde. Veb Verlag der Kunst, 1962. Quarto. Hardbound photo-illustrated, library protected dust jacket. Numerous black-and-white and color reproductions. Text in German. Still one of the finest books on Heartfield available. Written and compiled by his brother. Scarce. Very Good dust jacket is edge worn and has half-inch chip at crown; book is Fine, with some foxing to top page and board edges.

Van Deren Coke, Avantgarde Photography in Germany, 1919-1939. Schirmer/Mosel, Munich, 1982. Quarto. Photo-illustrated wrappers. 108 full-page black-and-white reproductions. An invaluable reference that includes biographical information, chronology, and bibliography. German photography of the 20s and 30s has become the most fertile period for study in that country's history of the medium. Widely influential, the photographers during that time, including Dr. Erich Salomon, Herbert Bayer, Karl Blossfeldt, Moholy-Nagy, and August Sander, among others, explored both experimental and straight approaches to photography. Van Deren Coke, curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, has written a historical account of the economical and political climate that spurred this movement. Light soiling to top edge and front fly-leaf; typical edge wear and mild yellowing; otherwise Fine.

Bauhaus Fotographie. Texts by Walter Peterhans, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart, Ernst Kallai, and others. Edition Marzona, Dusseldorf, 1982. 320 pp. Numerous black-and-white reproductions. Text in German. Quarto. Hardbound in library protected dust jacket. An important collection of Bauhaus photographs that includes much lesser-known work. A light scuff to lower corner; library protected dust jacket is lightly rubbed; an otherwise Fine copy of a scarce book.
