Verdi Yahooda. Guidelines to the System. Bookworks, London, 1990. Limited edition of 500 copies. Octavo. Stiff tan wrappers made from pattern-cutting board and embossed with white outline of a garment cutter's pattern; internal metal bindering clasps. 48 pp.

An artist's book with two series of photo works that relate to Yahooda's experience as a garment industry pattern cutter; between them is positioned a short story by Craigie Horsfield set in Eastern Europe that includes carefully observed and sometimes macabre moments. The first photo series uses diagrams and photographs that explore how the body is measured. The second series is composed of eight plates of photograms which incorporate items used by a tailor: thread, pins, needles, etc. The images suggest "fragments from an unconscious sequence," rather than a narrative.

A fine copy.
