Hungarian Memories. Photographs by André Kertész. Introduction by Hilton Kramer. New York Graphic Society/Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1982. xi + 194 pp. Large quarto. First edition. SIGNED on title page. Clothbound in photo-illustrated dustjacket. Numerous black-and-white reproductions.
André Kertész was born in Budapest in 1894, and photographed in his native land from 1912 to 1925, before leaving for Paris. This is the most comprehensive book of his early work; it was printed in Switzerland in rich gravure. His images capture the small dramas of peasant life in villages not far from Budapest, his experiences as a soldier in the ill-fated Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, and images of hard times in post-war Budapest. Handsomely printed by Imprimerie Jean Genoud in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Light rubbing to jacket; otherwise Fine. |
