In This Proud Land. America 1935-1943 in the FSA Photographs. Roy Emerson Stryker and Nancy Wood. Gallahad Books, New York, 1973. First edition. Large quarto. Cloth in photo-illustrated dustjacket. 191 pp.
During the period covered in this book, Roy Stryker was the head of the Historical Division of the Farm Security Administration and he assembled a team of extraordinarily talented photographers to document American society from the Depression and New Deal era to the first years of World War II; they included Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein, Ben Shahn, Russell Lee and others. This book presents his appraisal of the effort and reproduces in high quality halftone a choice selection of two hundred of the 270,000 images that make up the archive.
A fine copy; dustjacket with just faint handsoiling and light edge rubs and two very small closed tears at the top of the back panel.
