An early catalogue by Struth, who has gone on to be one of the central figures of the Düsseldorf School, referring to the photographers who studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie. Over the past twenty years this group--which also includes Andreas Gursky, Axel Hütte, Thomas Ruff, and Candida Höfer, among others-- has completely altered our notions of the photographic image.
"The photography of Thomas Struth (born in 1954 in Geldern, living in Düsseldorf) deals with urban architecture. Objective shots show streets, buildings, or squares in various places in the US, Europe, and Japan. The normality of the architectural reality defining public space has the effect that in the photographic reproduction it, to a large extent, remains unrecognized.
