The Inhabitants. Photographs and text by by Wright Morris. New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1946. First Edition. Unpaginated. Hardbound with light tan linen cloth stamped in black at spine, blind on front cover. Library protected dust jacket. Numberous black-and-white reproductions.

First edition of this seminal work that was reissued in 1972. Morris' photographs, like his writing, speak eloquently of life in middle America in the 1930s and 1940s. "Their outlook and their dreams unite with the pictures to form an evocative portrait of America. Each exists independently, until joined in the mind's eye of the reader."--the publisher. Featured in Andrew Roth's The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century

A Fine copy in a Very Good dust jacket; book shows only slight signs of wear at corners; the well-protected dust jacket has the following flaws: a half-inch tear to front and chipping at crown and tail; rear has a small edge tear, some foxing, and a half-inch hole; there is an approximately 2 1/2 x 2 1/2" area of abrasion in which the surface of jacket has been rubbed off.
