Boyhood Photos of J.H. Lartigue: The Family Album of a Gilded Age. Introduction and afterword by unnamed author. Ami Guichard, Switzerland, 1966. Unpaged. Oblong quarto. Hardbound with gilt-embossing and tipped-in image. Numerous tipped-in black-and-white reproductions on heavy green paper.

Lartigue's sometimes fanciful album of his upper-class family's life in pre-WWI France, contains over 160 tipped-in photos, some full page. Bicycle-propelled airplanes, a gallery of French fashion, outings at the beach, are just some of the many spontaneous scenes represented. Lartigue was born to a wealthy French family in 1894, was given a camera in 1901; his work in many ways represents the beginnings of snapshot aesthetic in photography, making him an extremely important figure in the history of the medium. A beautifully produced book.

A Fine copy with very slight (and typical) warping of boards.
