The Jazz People of New Orleans. Lee Friedlander. Afterword by Whitney Balliett. Pantheon Books, New York, 1992. First edition. Oblong quarto. Cloth in photo-illustrated dustjacket. 120 pp. SIGNED IN BLACK MARKER BY LEE FRIEDLANDER on the free front endpaper.

Friedlander demonstrates his versatility and wide-ranging interests once more, photographing the subculture of jazz musicians in New Orleans on visits from 1957 to 1974. His images seem as unrehearsed as the music of the jamming musicians, and they capture the restless movement of outdoor musical events, including celebrations and funerals that featured marching brass bands. The ninety-four duotone images were printed by Amilcare Pizzi in Milan.

A very fine copy.
