The globetrotting van der Elsken compiled these images from 1959-1960. Volume 1 takes in India, Malaga, Indonesia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Japan. Volume 2 finds the photographer in Africa.
A photobook artist without peer, Van der Elsken did not regard photography as an autonomous phenomenon but as something that only acquires meaning in relation to other images. His numerous photobooks are characterized by a direct, highly personal treatment of image, text and layout, over which he always maintained a high degree of control.
