Rare hardbound edition of one of the exemplary twentieth century photographic books, containing twelve large, perfectly seen images by Walker Evans, exquisitely printed in sheet-fed gravure by the Photogravure and Color Company. Each image is protected by tissue-glassine. The photographs were taken between 1931 and 1962, from Maine to Alabama. In his text, Szarkowski writes: "What began as the personal vision of Walker Evans has impressed itself upon our consciousness and become part of the symbolism of our recent past.....In spite of the formal strength, and sometimes the lyric beauty, of the individual prints, the largest meaning of Evans' work is cumulative. By modification, by contrast, by addition, these pictures comment on one another. In intention and in effect, they are part of a single, coherent, continuing statement."
