A scarce early monograph on the work of this enigmatic artist. Predates both the The Family Album of Lucybelle Crater and the Aperture monograph (both, 1974). "Looking at [Meatyard's] pictures, I am aware that my basic assumptions about reality are being tampered with," says Wendell Berry in his introduction. "I am being nudged, forcibly and a bit gleefully," he goes on to say, "by the possibility that what we have taken to be reality is a mere social convention, going out of date. I turn from the photographs to my surroundings, feeling that what I see is not all that there is."
