Ralph Eugene Meatyard. With Notes by Arnold Gassan and Wendell Berry. Gnomon Press, Lexington, Kentucky, 1970. First edition. Small quarto. Stiff photo-illustrated wrappers. Unpaged. Text + 34 full-page duotone plates + list of Meatyard's exhibitions and a selected bibliography. Near Fine+; slight bump to crown of spine; mild age tanning.
A scarce early monograph on the work of this enigmatic artist. Predates both the The Family Album of Lucybelle Crater and the Aperture monograph (both, 1974). "Looking at [Meatyard's] pictures, I am aware that my basic assumptions about reality are being tampered with," says Wendell Berry in his introduction. "I am being nudged, forcibly and a bit gleefully," he goes on to say, "by the possibility that what we have taken to be reality is a mere social convention, going out of date. I turn from the photographs to my surroundings, feeling that what I see is not all that there is."
Ralph Eugene Meatyard: A Retrospective. Edited with text by Van Deren Coke. Center for Visual Arts Gallery, Illinois State University/Independent Curators Inc., Washington, D.C., 1976. Small quarto. Near Fine+; moderate rubbing and edge wear.
