A gorgeously reproduced book that was a significant departure from Friedlander's more well-known 'social landscape' subjects. Dating from 1972 and 1979, these images of flora were taken in the United States, Canada, France, Japan and Australia. Some appeared in the earlier book, "Cherry Blossom Time in Japan" (1986). In contrast to his other bodies of work, full of visual puns and wry wit, these images are unabashedly sensual. The lush printing of the plates highlights the play between depth of field and textural, dimensional illusion. That Friedlander was able to make us see such a familiar subject through the lens of his own vision only confirms his status as one of the the most singular artists of the last 50 years.
