Petra. In the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Photographs and Introduction by Emmet Gowin. Essay “Petra: The Rose-Red City Half as Old as Time” by Phillip C. Hammond. Designed by Eleanor Morris Caponigro. Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York, 1986. First Edition. Cover paper folder over stiff cardboard with a tritone illustration tipped onto front. Large Quarto, 36 pp., 15 tri-tone plates.
In 1982 Emmet Gowin was invited to visit the country of his former student, Queen Noor al Hussein of Jordan, the wife of King Hussein. In 1983 and again in 1985, Gowin returned to photograph the ancient city of Petra. Printed by Meriden/Stinehour, the magnificent varnished plates accurately match the color and tonality of Gowin's rich photographs. The work depicts the beauty and mystery of the ancient tombs and passageways of this city that flourished from fourth-century B.C. until the mid-sixth century A.D. New York, 1986. Scarce.
