Viviane Sassen: Flamboya. Contrasto, Paris, 2008. 96 pp. Tall quarto (9 1/2 x 12 in./24 x 30 cm). First edition. SIGNED on title page and dated, 'Amsterdam/ 10.IV.2009' Hardbound. Photo-illustrated boards. No jacket as issued. 46 colour reproductions.

One of Martin Parr's Best Books of the Decade and one of Rinko Kawauchi's selections for Best Book of 2010. In 2011, Sassen won the prestigious International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award for Applied/Fashion/Advertising Photography. Earlier this year, she was subject of a major show, "Viviane Sassen / In and Out of Fashion," at Amsterdam’s Huis Marseille Museum for Photography.

"According to leading photography curator Charlotte Cotton, the fashion photography of Viviane Sassen is creating 'an axis shift in the genre'... Sassen is also that rare thing: a photographer whose work straddles the often mutually exclusive – but increasingly blurred – worlds of fashion and fine art....Perhaps more than any of her contemporaries, she has undercut the received image of Africa as a continent of conflict, suffering and poverty. Instead, she has made an ongoing series of performative photographs in which her subjects seem to exist in a suspended state between waking and dreaming." Sean O'Hagan, The Guardian.

"Flamboya includes photographs taken across Africa—from Cape Town to Kenya to Zambia—that disregard traditional boundaries of genres and tackle the problematic bond between photography, imperialism, and the colonial imagination. Viviane Sassen’s aesthetic vocabulary suggestively recalls documentary as much as staged photography and relies on a visual economy that invites the formulation of multiple interpretations. Seen through Sassen’s lens, the ethnic Other interrogates the traditional nexus laid between vision, knowledge, and power, which lies at the heart of the history and ideology of photography."--the publisher
