Manchoukuo: A Pictorial Record [Le Mandchoukouo: Chronique Illustree]. Asahi shimbun, Tokyo and Osaka, 1934. 320 pp. Quarto. First edition. Clothbound. (Lacking scarce dust jacket.) Maps on endpapers. Gravure reproductions.
A benign-looking, yet chilling Japanese propaganda book from 1934. Published in English and French, during Japan's brutal occupation of Manchuria, in northeastern China. The documentary images, some employing the latest Modernist visual styles, were intended to show a Western audience a happy and industrious population thriving under benevolent Japanese rule in the puppet state of Manchoukuo.
About Near Fine; light wear to 'tips'; crown and base of spine just slightly abraded; minor corner imperfections.
