Near Fine+; covers rubbed.

A rarely seen catalogue from an important show.

Reanimating Matter: Raoul Hague's Sculptures & Robert Frank's Photographs. Essay by David Levi Strauss. Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art. State University of New York, New Paltz, 2002. 32 pp. Octavo (small size). Stiff wrappers. Black-and-white reproductions.
Very Fine.

Robert Frank recognized the intrigue in [Hague's] works early, and in 1978 he and the photographer Lee Friedlander collaborated on a book, "The Sculptures of Raoul Hague," published by Eakins Press in a limited edition of five....David Levi Strauss believes the photographer captured the essence of Hague's tree trunk sculptures as no one else. Through his work, viewers experience Frank circling a 1964 sculpture with his camera - "not displaying it but regarding it," just one might in a gallery, Levi Strauss wrote.--from the show's Press Release

Robert Frank (Portuguese Catalogue. With texts by Frank, Jack Kerouac, and Joachim Schmid. Encontros da Fotografie Coimbra/Galeria Almada Negreiros, Portugal, 1988. 30 pp. Octavo (small size). Stiff Printed wrappers. Black-and-white reproductions.
Near Fine-; staining to lower extremities and edges (rear 7 pp., front 4 pp) images unaffected.

All of the texts in this very scarce catalogue are in Portuguese, except a facsimile reproduction of a hand-written note from Frank to exhibition curator Almado da Silva Pereira in which Frank tells him the 33 photos he is sending are 'selection of what I had left here in the house -- please treat them carefully as I don't print anymore -- It's the past -- and it continues.')

For the Frank completist, three very rare catalogues. Reanimating Matter: Raoul Hague's Sculptures & Robert Frank's Photographs in particular highlights an important friendship that dates to Frank's earliest years in the U.S.
