Rob Pruitt. Holy Crap. 38th Street Publishers, New York, 2010. 320 pp. Small quarto [8 1/2 x 5 3/4"; 22 x 14.5 cm]. Edition of 1000 copies. Stiff wrappers with spray painted spine, gilt edging, gold-metallic ribbon bookmark and 'drilled hole for ease of hanging'. Offset black-and-white reproductions.

A awesome book! Holy Crap that later went on to become a wryly subversive public art installation at the exhibition "Divine Comedy," held at Sotheby's in 2010. Around that time the NY Times described the once-controversial Pruitt as "a gleefully tricky purveyor of trash culture who is known for making paintings of pandas and of Paris Hilton, who has fashioned an eternal-flame monument from a bar table and a Bic lighter, and who once held an extremely brief gallery show composed solely of a long floor mirror bisected by a line of real cocaine, which was ingested by visitors."

From the artist's intro to Holy Crap:
"I love multitasking, like driving and having a religious experience at the same time. I love jokes. I love advertising and billboards. I love Jenny Holzer. I love advice and rules and adages and reminders and lists, like the 10 commandments. I love big bold larger then life characters like God and Satan. I love horror movies and stories of the supernatural and high drama narratives distilled into a handful of words, like 'He died for your sins.' But what follows is a whole new testament..."

"Holy Crap collects hundreds of photographs of outdoor church signs, whose punchy maxims, written to attract visitors and provide sage advice to passersby, most often fall short of the mark. Artist Rob Pruitt relishes the misspellings, accidental double entendres, and awkward references to popular culture employed by just about every denomination of the Christian church."--the publisher.

Fine.
