In the summer of 1999, Christian Boltanski, Ilya Kabakov and Jean Kalman created a haunting work to accompany a presentation of Wagner's Ring Cycle in the historic town of Beelitz. The site specific work was set in the remains of the nearby Beelitzer sanatoriums The exhibition was conceived as a farewell to the utopias of the 20th Century. Their sustained confrontation with Wagner was documented in photos and presented in these two different formats. A haunting work!!
