Throughout his career, Clergue frequented the beaches of the Camargue region. In addition to photographing the nude figure on its beaches, he was equally interested in the abstract forms of sand and water, a theme that has, not incidentally, formed a leitmotif in the exploration of abstraction by a number of photographers during the twentieth century.
