Document Miseinen [Document Teenagers]. Volume 12 in the Seven Mook Magazine series. Sebunsha, Tokyo, 1980. 111 pp. Small quarto (10 x 8.25 in./25.5 x 21 cm). Stiff wrappers in illustrated dust jacket. Black-and-white reproductions.
A classic document of youthful rebellion--should be included alongside iconic photobooks by Larry Clark (Teenage Lust & Tulsa); Jim Goldberg (Raised by Wolves) and, more recently, Corinne Day (Diary) and Mike Brodie (Period of Juvenile Prosperity) in any collection devoted to 'alienated youth'. Volume 12 in the Seven Mook Magazine series, which has since been made famous by Kohei Yoshiyuki's Document Kouen (which is volume 4). Divided into three sections: the first two devoted to teen sex, prostitution, and smoking, and the third to the bosozoku (bikers' gangs). The rough-grainy-out-of-focus Post-Provoke style here becomes a perfect verité foil for portraying teenage angst and anomie.
