Day of Paris. Photographs by André Kertész. Edited by George Davis. Jacket designed by Alexey Brodovitch. Book designed by Peter Pollack. George Davis, editor. J.J. Augustin Publisher, New York, 1945. 148 pp. First edition. Small quarto. Clothbound in (very scarce!) illustrated dust jacket. Numerous black-and-white illustrations.

Kertész's first American publication appeared after he had been living in New York for almost ten years. Taken during the 20s and 30s, but not appearing until the end of World War II, the images have a wistfulness that make them some of his most appealing. In Roth, et. al., The Book of 101 Books, Vince Aletti writes, "Though Day of Paris is full of cityscapes.... the photographer is always alert to the human heart of the city, and even his pictures of figures passing on the street are engaging." As Parr and Badger explain, "In the end, Day of Paris, despite the presence of the radical Brodovitch, is deeply nostalgic in tone. In the uncertain days following the war nostalgia for prewar Paris was both inevitable, and probably an important part of the healing process." A true classic containing some of Kertész's most famous photos!

Fine in Very Good- dust jacket; clean tight copy; jacket with nice complete front panel; slight losses to top and bottom of spine area; internal repairs; wear and slight abrasion to edges, with a few small chips.
