Ward 81. Photographs by Mary Ellen Mark. Text by Karen Folger Jacobs. With an Introduction by Milos Forman. Designed by Arne Lewis. Simon and Schuster, New York, 1979. 96 pp. Oblong quarto. First edition. Clothbound in photo-illustrated dust jacket. Black-and-white reproductions.

A powerful and intimate portrait of the life of women in a psychiatric ward in The Oregon State Hospital shot over a period of thirty-six days. Mark first visited the ward in 1975 when she documented the filming of director Milos Forman's Oscar-winning film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The photographs in this book show the women, who were considered dangerous to themselves and/or to others, both in their private hellish worlds and as they interact with each other or the photographer.

About Fine with some light wear to boards; remainder mark lower page edges; Near Fine+ jacket with some moderate edge wear.
