Dnesni Moskva. [Today's Moscow]. Photogrpahs by Vladimir Vlcek. Designed by Vladimir Smutny. Slovem i Obrazem, Prague, 1947. Small quarto. First edition. Beige paper-covered boards, top edge dyed red with red cloth spine. Photo-illustrated dust-jacket. Gravure reproductions printed by Schulz.
Printed on the eve of the Czech coup d'état of 1948, Vlcek's images show all the aesthetic strategies of the New Objectivity and the mid-1930's Czech avant-garde, now deployed toward rather more blatantly sinister aims. Like Jenicek & Sutnar's books from the 30s on offer here, we see a fascinating blend of propaganda, straight reportage and cutting edges aesthetics.
Lacking scarce slipcase; slight corner bumps; dust-jacket archivally reinforced at 'tips' and along spine and fore-edge areas. |
