Myself: Timed Exposures. Photographs by Mike Mandel. Self-published, Los Angeles, 1971. Unpaged. Oblong octavo (small size). Stiff photo-illustrated wrappers. Saddle-stitched. Black-and-white reproductions.
Mike Mandel's best known book is his 1977 collaboration with Larry Sultan, Evidence. Throughout his career he has made a number of artist's books, this being his very first. In these self-portraits, he set his camera's auto-timer before hastily assuming a pose in front of the lens. Low-tech, to be sure, but a technique that gives these images a quirky, spontaneous quality in which, as he says, "the machine has made its 'decisive moment' and only the film knows what latent treasures it owns..."
