Jazz. Photographs by William Claxton. Foreword by Leonard Feather. Afterword by Terry Southern. Twelvetrees Press, Pasadena, CA, 1987. Unpaged. Tall quarto. First edition. Signed on front free-endpaper. Clothbound in printed dust jacket. Sheet-fed grauvure reproductions.
This early Twelvetrees (later Twin Palms) publication re-presents, Jazz Life, William Claxton's 1962 photographic survey of contemporary jazz. That book was divided geographically to represent the full range of American jazz at the zenith of its power, just before it gave way fully to rock as the popular music of choice--and well before its 'museum-ification' (thank you Wynton Marsalis!). Here, almost every major jazz luminary of the day is represented, plus many lesser figures not quite as well-remembered.
