Elle-Même. Photographs and text by Irina Ionesco. PTYX, Tokyo, 1996. Folio. Edition of 120 copies. Four-point clothbound folio with tipped in image containing 36 loose high-quality duotone reproductions plus six archival sheets with title page, text, biography, and exhibition history.

Ionesco is perhaps most famous for her erotically charged images of her daughter, a large number of which were published in the 2004 book Eva: Eloge de ma Fille. "In my gaze the greatest love of all took place," she writes there. As A.D. Coleman writes in his introduction to that book, "The hermetic quality of [Ionesco's] images, the protected atmosphere they emanate, the sense of events transpiring in a space sealed off from reality and secured within a bubble of slow time...By the time this series ends, chronologically, Eva is of an age to take these now-rehearsed rituals and games into the real world on her own--to begin her own sexual life with her peers as she enters adolescence..." And, indeed, while this beautifully produced portfolio also features a young Eva, it also picks up where the earlier work left off, with Eva pictured as an adult, having emerged fully into self-consciousness and womanhood.

As New in publisher's original shipping carton.
