Richard Misrach. Grapestake Gallery, San Francisco, 1979. Unpaged. Quarto. SIGNED and hand-numbered (82/100) on front flyleaf. Clothbound with tipped-in cover image. Acetate protector. 56 photo-lithographic reproductions.

"[Misrach's] masterwork in terms of book-making features the last major series that he made in black-and-white before turning to color--namely, his desert nightscapes...the photographer intended the cover of a cactus to serve as the title--an approach that is fully in keeping with the mysterious nature of these pictures....a book about the camera revealing what the eye cannot see... a strange beauty, almost of a forensic nature, with cacti and details of the desert floor being highlighted unnaturally by the strobe. Misrach highlighted this artificiality by heavily toning his prints with split-tone selenium, a tonality picked up well in the printing of the book. It adds a feeling of menace to the undoubted beauty."--Parr & Badger

Near Fine; some smudging to acetate; a hint of discoloration to boards; bumping to lower corners.
